Tips for Creating Social Media Content–Without Event Photos

As event professionals, our social media accounts are typically flooded with gorgeous images of our latest events and the elements that make them stand-out experiences: gorgeous food, beautifully designed tables, stunning venues and more.

In a time when COVID-19 means all bets (and live events) are off, it can be tempting to stop posting on social media altogether, or to throw all your rules for doing so out the window and continue to share that content, while beautiful, doesn’t resonate with the situation we currently find ourselves in.

However, it is precisely during this time that maintaining your brand’s voice, mission and standards is even more important.

We may not be planning destination experiences now, but my team and I have been using our expertise in doing just that to create relevant, on-brand content that takes into account the current state of the world.

Here are three ways you can harness our approach to create meaningful content that showcases your company’s (or personal) expertise while live events are on hiatus:

1. Showcase your market expertise.

When it’s safe to travel and once again bring people together, clients will want to be out and about more than ever. Whether they stay

Photos: Cross-stitch camaraderie brings people together from around region – West Central Tribune

WILLMAR — In a secluded corner of the Willmar Community Center, a group of passionate cross-stitch enthusiasts spent the better part of the afternoon Wednesday meticulously working on their various projects.

One might think the idea of a group getting together to cross-stitch would be a relatively common occurrence throughout west central Minnesota. However, many have spent years traveling long distances if they wanted to be a part of a larger cross-stitch gathering.

With that, Rose Newhouse and Michele Draves began looking around to see what kind of options they had for such a meeting place in Willmar. They approached Willmar Community Center Manager Britta Diem, who was more than happy to help out the cause.

“Britta promised we would always have a space here,” Newhouse said. “They are very welcoming here.”

The first gathering drew in folks from as far away as Sauk Center and Sacred Heart.

Kate Middleton’s photo controversy: 5 ways to spot edited pictures |

The controversy surrounding the apparently edited photo of Kate Middleton and her children for Mother’s Day has brought the issue of manipulated images in the media back into the spotlight. While the Palace is admitted to the photo being edited, the incident underscores the importance of general digital literacy in an era where sophisticated editing tools are widely available. Let’s delve into five methods for spotting edited photos, using the Kate Middleton controversy as a case study.

Examining inconsistencies in details

Some people started doubting the authenticity of the photo of Kate Middleton due to some unusual inconsistencies in the image. Keen-eyed viewers noticed strange textures in Kate’s hair, a hand that appeared to be deliberately blurred, and zippers that seemed to serve no purpose. Moreover, the crossed fingers and legs of the children seemed unusual for a formal family portrait. When verifying the authenticity of an image, it is essential to zoom in and carefully examine the details. Such inconsistencies can be indications of digital manipulation.

Identifying unnatural lighting and colors

When determining if a photo is real or fake, it’s crucial to consider the consistency of lighting and colors throughout the image. In the case of the

Iceberg photos: tips for getting the best shot possible

The ice giants have been gliding toward the Newfoundland coastline since last week, and people have been posting their photos of the icebergs on social media.

If you’re looking to get the best shot possible, one St. John’s photographer has some tips about what you can do to ensure your picture captures the beautiful scene.

Alick Tsui, who has been an avid photographer for 20 years, says photographing icebergs can be tricky because of certain light factors.

The contrast of the stark white ice against the dark water makes for unique photo conditions, but Tsui says there are some tricks you can use to get that great photo.

The most important thing? Don’t be afraid of bad weather or early mornings.

“You should choose a day which is not too sunny because the iceberg doesn’t like bright light, otherwise it will come out really overblown,” he said.

“So on a cloudy day, or when the sun is starting to set like around 6-ish, or early in the morning, that would be the best time.”

Don’t be afraid of your settings

Tsui says using a tripod is a good idea for anyone who doesn’t yet have a steady hand.

“Your hand

Photos: Disco-pop flash mob shimmies onto College Green

Pierce, Prausnitz-Weinbaum and the rest of the group knew exactly what type of day they wanted to perform — but they weren’t sure of the date.

“There’s always that first College Green day, when everyone comes out of their winter hibernation,” Pierce said. “It’s one of the best days at Brown, and we really wanted to celebrate that first exciting day when it finally felt like spring on campus.”

After closely monitoring the weather, they finalized plans for the mid-March flash mob just 48 hours before it took place. And Mother Nature came through: the sky was blue, the temperature lingered in the mid-60s, and students across campus — unaware that the dance was about to break out in front of them — gathered on the College Green during lunch.

Following the successful and joyous performance, Pierce and Prausnitz-Weinbaum were able to check off a shared bucket-list item.

“Mia and I had been dreaming of doing a flash mob since we were sophomores, but it never really came together,” Pierce said. “This year, because we are seniors, we thought it was our last chance to make it happen. And we did.”

Prausnitz-Weinbaum echoed the sentiment, adding that Attitude Dance Company

Beach Photos Confuse People About How COVID-19 Spreads

During a pandemic, public-health messaging is essential to saving lives. Media organizations have played a major role in that messaging over the past year, and not always for the better.

Across the English-speaking world, many news stories about the spread of COVID-19 have been accompanied by photographs of people in outdoor settings, particularly beaches. “Many news organizations have seized upon beaches, and scenes of beachgoers, as a sign of why things are so bad in the United States,” Zeynep Tufekci wrote in The Atlantic last summer. She has compiled many examples of the phenomenon in an ongoing Twitter thread.

Why publications keep using these photos are hard to pinpoint. In a health crisis, many people may feel provoked by the sight of others cavorting in the sun—even though one of the best ways to avoid COVID-19, which spreads easiest to individuals when inhale particles exhaled by others, is to avoid public indoor spaces in favor of outdoor spaces. Or perhaps beach pictures, which have a somewhat aspirational quality and typically feature attractive people wearing bathing suits, just attract lots of readers.

Regardless, our research indicates that these news articles with beach photos actually leave some readers with a false sense
