The bid picture: Nobel prize winners explain auction theory, collaboration

As a young boy in York, Nebraska, Stanford economist Robert Wilson and his friends would sometimes go watch the Saturday morning cattle auctions held near his childhood home and watch the farm animals be sold off, one by one.

“Us kids would just go over and sit in the bleachers. A cow would be pulled in and stand there while an oral, ascending auction of subsequent bids was conducted until the auctioneer declared the cow sold,” recalled Wilson, whose scholarship in auction theory and design earned him and his Stanford colleague and former graduate student Paul Milgrom the 2020 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences.

Wilson didn’t know it then, but the types of auctions he witnessed as a child are what economists call an English auction. These are the kinds of auctions most of us are familiar with, as they’re used to sell everything from artwork and antiques to memorabilia, but they’re only one among many auction designs that Wilson and Milgrom studied.

Together, the pair have explored how different auction designs

Dallas photographer provides free senior portraits

Photographer, Dunice Harrell, starts the Gift of a Lifetime program for high school seniors.

DALLAS — When all the hard work is done, you finally get the reward.

“Just to see that you’re getting closer and closer to graduation, it’s really….really, really, really like…almost there. Just wait,” said Jocelyn Recio, a Garland High School senior.

While waiting can be hard to do, Recio reflects on the sacrifices her parents made to get her to a prized senior moment: graduation photos.

“They left the family back in Mexico. “The story is really touching to me because they want a better life for their children,” Recio said.

It is a desire that pushes Recio even through his most trying times. In September, her father had surgery to have his toe amputated from diabetes.

“He lost his job and we were really financially struggling,” Recio said. It really touched me because I really wanted to be strong for them and keep going to school and keep reminding myself that they’re the reason why I’m here.”

It is a reason that also touched photographer, Dunice Harrell, founder of Dunice Harrell Photography. Last year, she started the program, GOAL It stands for “The Gift of

District-Level Learning Loss Data Evaluated

Today, The Education Recovery Scorecard, a collaboration with researchers at the Center for Education Policy Research at Harvard University (CEPR) and Stanford University’s Educational Opportunity Project, released the first comparable view of district-level learning loss during the pandemic using the recently released 2022 NAEP data, and states who have publicly reported their district proficiency rates on their Spring 2022 assessments. These interactive district-level maps include data from 29 states (plus DC) — where the necessary data was available.

CEPR Faculty Director Thomas J. Kane and Sean Reardon, professor of poverty and inequality in education at Stanford University and director of the Educational Opportunity Project have used the 2022 NAEP scores to make state assessment results comparable. The new research, found on educationrecoveryscorecard.orgalso incorporates data on weeks remote and the federal recovery dollars (ESSER) received per district, equipping state and local leaders with the information they need to re-calibrate their current recovery plans.

“The pandemic was like a band of tornadoes that swept across the country,” said Kane. “Some communities were left relatively untouched, while neighboring schools were devastated. The Education Recovery Scorecard is the first high-resolution map of the tornadoes’ path to help local leaders see the magnitude of

Clean and dirty topics explored at livestock transporters conference + PHOTOS

LRTAQ president Gerard Johnson opened the national conference in Toowoomba this morning.

WHETHER it is a decent feed at the roadhouse, a place to dump effluent or a bridge big enough to handle the weight of an extremely heavy electric truck, livestock transporters have been called for foresight at the industry’s national conference today.

Some of the shiniest livestock trucks and trailers in the country descended on the Goods Shed in the transport hub of Toowoomba, for the combined Australian Livestock Transporters Association and Livestock and Rural Transporters Association of Queensland conference.

A growing legislative pressure to manage effluent loads on trucks and targets to significantly reduce emissions in the next decade were two of the persistent topics through a series of panel discussions – which led to calls for the public and private sectors to show foresight in decisions about infrastructure .

Poor road conditions across the country also featured heavily in discussions.

In opening the conference, Toowoomba Regional Council incumbent mayor Geoff McDonald said the council had been lobbying the Government to back up regulations with infrastructure.

“If the Government is going to legislate effluent disposal then they need to fund the infrastructure to do it,” Mr McDonald

Fireworks Photos: Celebration of Light mobile phone tips

We’ve all seen it. Spectators holding up mobile photos and even tablets trying to capture the fiery blasts of fireworks. Often, the resulting images fall short of expectations.

If that’s you, we’ve enlisted some help to make sure you capture those fireworks on your screen — on the first try.

To prepare for Vancouver’s Celebration of Light, On the Coast spoke with two leading Instagram photographers based in Vancouver to get their tips on how to take perfect pics of the pyrotechnics.

1. Lock and load

This little known tip is simple but will likely make the biggest difference. iPhones find it challenging to focus and balance exposure levels when fireworks are blasting away in a dark sky.

To prevent an inevitable delay and shaky photos, Scott Rankin’s first tip is to use the iPhone’s “AE/AF lock” function.

You can take great fireworks shots if you keep just a few things in mind while focusing your photo. (Scott Rankin)

“Wait for a firework of good size and brightness, tap the focus and hold on to it. Focus on that one firework,” says Rankin. Then every time you see a firework that

Artists Use Toilet Paper In Photography Projects

How did this project get started?

Rolls and Tubes Collective: As we went into the initial pandemic lockdown, we determined we would have our critique group meeting via Zoom. The day we were to meet virtually, Jenny texted the group prior to our meeting stating she had nothing to show. On a whim, Colleen texted the group suggesting everyone make a quick photograph from the history of photography using toilet paper. Because we all felt a little scattered with the state of the world, this prompt was an unexpected distraction. We met and screen-shared our very first work (note, we weren’t yet “Rolls and Tubes”), and they made us laugh so hard. We realized that it had been weeks since we had laughed at all. It was, indeed, a needed release, and we wanted to replicate that feeling — and we knew we had many more of these in us.

Christy was a latecomer by a week and blew the project wide open by leaving her home to make her first photograph, bringing a delicious, transgressive indulgence to the group of pictures. Christy states, “For that first photo, my daughter and I drove from Berkeley to San Francisco to

Photos of Macron boxing raising eyebrows in France after he comes out swinging against Putin | Emmanuel Macron

The release of official photos showing Emmanuel Macron hitting a punching bag has been met with a mixture of praise and consternation in France.

The photo of the French president, posted on Instagram on Tuesday by his official photographer, Soazig de la Moissonnière, is colored in moody black and white, and shows the president with gritted teeth and bulging biceps as he works out.

Social media users soon began comparing him to Rocky Balboa, while others questioned the timing of the pictures, coming as Macron has called on Europe to ramp up its response to Russia’s war on Ukraine. Some said the photos showed him getting ready to take on President Vladimir Putin, himself no stranger to photoshoots designed to show off his sporting prowess.

Some camera and iPhone tips for shooting a lunar eclipse

Unlike solar eclipses, photographing the Earth’s shadow on the moon doesn’t require any special equipment. All an aspiring astral photographer needs is a camera (or camera-equipped smartphone), a steady hand and an app or two.

To get a good shot you will need some manual control over your camera settings and, ideally, a spot away from city lights. Then, depending on your equipment, decide if you want a close-up of the moon or a wide shot.

Note that shooting wide will make the moon appear small so compose your shot with something interesting in the foreground to give it more pop.

Because it can be difficult to focus in the dark, use your camera’s auto focus to lock in on a distant light source (not the stars or moon) before tilting the camera skyward and locking your tripod down.

This will keep the foreground you’ve carefully composed sharp without sacrificing moon clarity.

Alternatively, if you have a manual focus lens, dial it just back from infinity to achieve the same effect.

If you’re shooting a close-up with a telephoto lens or a point-and-shoot with a zoom, focus right on the moon.

Set the exposure

Typically, star shots are best with
