The best compact camera for 2023: top choices to take anywhere

Whether you’re upgrading from a smartphone or looking for a capable backup camera, the best compact cameras pack versatile shooting skills into pocket-friendly bodies. We’ve comprehensively tested a range of the top options and created this ranked list to point you in the right direction. Our selection covers everything from superzoom travel cameras to the best fixed-lens premium compacts and some of the best vlogging cameras.

We think the best compact camera for most people right now is the Fujifilm X100VI. Successor to the virally popular X100V – our previous favorite compact – it retains the fixed 23mm f/2 lens but adds a 40MP sensor and in-body image stabilization to become an even more accomplished street photography tool. It’s retro design is still beautiful, too.

If your budget doesn’t stretch that far – or you want a camera with a large optical zoom range – we also highly recommend the Panasonic Lumix ZS100 / TZ100, one of our favorite travel cameras. It pairs 10x optical zoom with a decent 1-inch sensor to produce rich, detailed images. It also benefits from an accessible touchscreen interface and an electronic viewfinder.

Our guide below targets take-anywhere cameras that offer something more than any

Nikon Zf camera review: The mirrorless has evolved | Technology News

Last week, braving the chilly New York winds to capture some early morning shots by the Hudson River, I was reflecting on how my life has changed over the year. Previously, I would have done this photo walk with a DSLR, now I have the iPhone 15 Pro Max, the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra and the Nothing Phone (2a) which I was reviewing. The DSLR has gradually stopped being a part of my life, so much so I’m not sure where I have stolen away my camera. But still, when the opportunity presented itself, I could say no to reviewing the new Nikon Zf camera, especially since I was keen to figure out how the full frame mirrorless segment was progressing.

As I took it out of the box, the Nikon Zf reminded me of the feeling of holding a proper camera, the confidence it offers with its sheer weight. The vintage-style Nikon Zf provides a film camera experience with the specs of a modern competitive mirrorless camera. However, while the embossed leather exterior

On her program, Politics Hub, she was attempting to throw an advert break as the chaos quickly ensured.

Amid a fiery debate, Beth was forced to step in as she attempted to take control of the situation,

She told her guests: “I don’t want to break it up but I’ve got to go to a break.”

Kaylee Gain: Teen beaten in on-camera fight still unconscious over 1 week later – National

Kaylee Gain, a 16-year-old student from Missouri who was attacked by other teenagers earlier this month, is still critically injured and unconscious more than one week after the harsh beating, according to a statement from the family’s lawyer.

Gain was attacked in St. Louis, Mo., on March 8 near Hazelwood East High School.

The fight, captured in a now-viral video, shows Gain being shoved to the ground and punched repeatedly in the head by another girl. When Gain, who is still fighting the other teenager, attempts to sit up on the pavement, she is pushed to the ground again. The teenager in the video is seen repeatedly smashing Gain’s head against the asphalt.

Around the girls, several other teenagers can also be seen fighting, or spectating.

Gain was left shaking on the pavement until police arrived. (Global News has viewed the video but has chosen not to include here due to its disturbing content, as well as the age of the participants.)

Nikon SnapBridge firmware update boasts exciting new features for beginner photographers

Nikon has announced a firmware update for its proprietary camera connectivity app SnapBridge. The news was delivered alongside a beefy new firmware 5.0 update for the Big N’s flagship Nikon Z9 mirrorless camera.

Nikon SnapBridge is available for iOS and Android devices, and can be used to remotely control compatible Nikon mirrorless Z-Series cameras and DSLRs. Firmware Ver. 2.11.0’s headline new feature is Easy Shooting Setup. This allows users to streamline their scenarios workflow by quickly and easily inputting camera settings for specific shooting.

Easy Shooting Setup provides a workaround for those who are unfamiliar with conventional camera jargon in favor of a more direct approach, with Nikon providing the following example: “soft, out-of-focus background or motion blur options.” These settings are also instantly applied to the camera, streamlining the shooting process and making complicated camera settings more accessible for newcomers.

This new functionality is currently only compatible with the Nikon Zf, Z5, Z fc, Z50, and Z30, which isn’t surprising considering all five cameras are targeted squarely at the enthusiast or beginner markets.

Good news, Nikon fans – your camera firmware updates are about to get even better

Today’s firmware updates for mirrorless cameras generally serve two purposes: fixing bugs missed during production and adding new features. The first should be obligatory, the second optional – after all, a customer purchases a camera on its current merit (assuming it’s bug-free), not for what product it could become. Yet, in a recent interview with Nikon’s Head of UX Planning, Mitsuteru Hino says the camera giant seeks to “exceed our customers’ expectations”, delivering new features in its mirrorless cameras.

We’ve already seen regular updates for most Nikon mirrorless cameras including the Nikon Z6, Z7, Z8 and Z9, plus more recently the Nikon Z fc at CP Plus 2024. For example, at the time of writing and two years after its launch, the Z9 professional camera is on firmware version 4.1 after three major firmware updates, although I’m still waiting for a major update for my Z6 II. We’ve seen new photo and video features being added such as bird and airplane subject detection AF, improved eye detection AF, higher video frame rates, pixel shift, plus updated UIs.

According to Mitsuteru in that same interview with Phototrend, he suggests Nikon’s firmware strategy is only going to get more hands-on and responsive

iPhone 16 camera bump design changes again says rumour

Apple is rumored to change up the design of its entry-level iPhone 16 with the cameras on the back going from a diagonal array to a vertical one which we last saw on the iPhone 12 back in 2020. A new set of renders and design schematic have appeared online detailing a pill-shaped camera island housing two sensors on the back with the LED flash on the side. A separate rendering from Apple Hub gives us a look at a few more color options alongside a comparison to the iPhone 16 Pro which is expected to offer the same basic design as the iPhone 15 Pro. Based on rumours, the whole reasoning behind the redesigned camera location on the iPhone 16 is so that the device can record spatial video which can then be played back on the Apple Vision Pro.

BCSO arrests man caught on camera attempting to break into home with crowdbar

According to the sheriff, the suspect told investigators he left the property when he realized there were kids inside.

SAN ANTONIO — The Bexar County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO) arrested a man who was caught on camera trying to break into a far northwest-side home.

Sabashtian Beltran, 21, was charged with attempted burglary of a habitation on Monday.

BCSO deputies say Beltran tried to break into the home located in the 800 block of Lovela Bend, near the intersection of Culebra Road and Galm Road, around 4:30 pm on Saturday.

A woman told KENS 5 she was at home with her two young children at the time of the attempted break-in. The entire incident was caught on camera.

The surveillance video shows a man approaching the house and knocking on the front door. The residents inside did not respond, deputies say. Apparently Beltran assumed the house was vacant, because he was then seen trying to pry the front door open with a crowbar.

When she realized what was happening, the victim told KENS 5 she grabbed her kids and planned to hide them in a room upstairs. That’s when the victim’s daughter screamed, which prompted Beltran to leave.

“He indicated that
